Now that most of us have a camera in our pocket, we snap a picture at everything that moves us. Then we share it on our plethora of social networks. Why not showcase those bad boys off to the world? Okay, maybe not to the world, but how about to anyone that walks by our device or home PC?
Well, Windows 8.1 allows you to show off all your pictures in all of their glory. Show people your ski vacation, summer retreat, fun family pictures, your nature walks or even that crazy guy doing street tricks on your walk to work. Windows will create a unique slideshow with collages, full screen pictures and a number of animations to bring them all to life. Did you know it will also pick images from the last year if you let it? Yeah, I know, pretty darn cool! I have heard that it also selects images based on the time of year, however, I haven’t taken the time to research the truth to that rumor.
Are you interested? Well, let’s begin…
First thing we need to do is bring up the settings screen by selecting the Settings charm from the charms menu.
A settings fly out will show slide out from the right. Select Change PC Settings.
The PC settings screen will display. Now, select the very large Lock screen tile on the right side of the screen.
This will take you to the Lock screen preview screen. To have your lock screen display a slide show, select the Play a slide show on the lock screen slider so that it displays On.
As you might have guessed, you can select the folders that you want the slide show to look for pictures. All you have to do is select Add a Folder and select the folder that you would like to include in your slide show.
As you can see, I am using a pictures folder from my SkyDrive folder that gets synced to my computer. This is really convenient when I take pictures pictures with my Nokia Lumia 1520 Windows Phone. Snap the photo and it will show up instantly in my slide shows on all my computers/devices.
WARNING: Remember, if you are syncing up to your SkyDrive folder with pictures that you take on your camera, all these pictures show up on your lock screen, so, if you take pictures you don’t want people to see, you might want to make a separate folder for your lock screen.
You also have a couple more options that you can set as well. Notice that you can also set the following:
- Include Camera Roll Folders from this PC and SkyDrive
- Only use pictures that will fit best on my screen
- Play a slide show when using battery power
- When my PC is inactive, show the lock screen instead of turning off the screen
- Turn off screen after slide show has played for
I won’t go into all these settings, but try them out and see which ones work best for your setup.
WARNING: Remember, be conscious of which settings you use as they may drain your battery.
If you are a power user with 2 or more monitors, the slideshow spans all your monitors. There have been plenty of times I walk by and stop in my tracks to relive the memories. Try it out. Really fun and awesome!
